For more
than 600 years, the art of karate has been taught in Japan. It wasn’t until
after the Second World War that members of the US military learned the
discipline and brought that knowledge back to the United States, where Robert
Trias opened the first dojo in 1945. As the discipline grew in popularity, the desire
for one to earn a black belt intensified. Earning a black belt denotes that a
student of karate has completed the highest level of martial arts training.
Earning a
black belt in karate takes dedication and the mastery of the training. While
there is no standard timeframe in which to earn a black belt, a student can
expect to earn their belt after five years of training. This, however, is
dependent on the student committing to attending classes twice a week on a
regular basis. For those that are extremely dedicated, with more intense
training, they can earn their black belt in as little as two or three years.
Shortening the time to reach the level of a black belt is discouraged by karate
masters as it reduces the wisdom learned during training.
